Live! from the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival with Mark Asch and Katie Rife

The Tokyo International Film Festival’s 39th edition, running from October 26 to November 4, mixed new titles that would surprise even the most hardened festivalgoer with restorations of Kenji Mizoguchi, Shinji Sōmai, and three films in Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno canon. It is my great fortune to attend, every year offering titles that recenter my sense of a given film year.

It’s one thing to describe the scenario and quite another to live it. In the spirit of being at an ever-moving festival in a lively city, I recorded a conversation at an outdoor restaurant on a Saturday night in Ginza. Our contributor Mark Asch was kind enough to sit down and offer a remarkably fluid set of thoughts on Hironori Kujiraoka’s Saravah and Takenoshin Yaza’s Hinotama: Ball of Fire in between sips of Asahi and bites of fried squid, while Letterboxd Journal‘s Katie Rife joined to share a few perspectives on the festival—the Japanese premiere of Godzilla Minus Zero coming to loom over our talk as it did much of this year’s festivities.
