The Criterion Collection’s January 2027 Lineup Features Claire Denis, Mike Leigh, and Deliverance on 4K

It’s not even Halloween but already time to set your 2027 viewing calendar. Coming to Criterion on Blu-ray are Claire Denis’ feature debut, Chocolat, a film whose colors and textures demand a higher, and Mike Leigh’s Career Girls, which will resonate differently after the vision of female friendship in his great, potentially final film Tender Loving Care. New and on 4K is John Boorman’s Deliverance, with “Dueling Banjos” screeching in restored sound; upgrade-wise, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is jumping to 4K from its 2021 disc, while Midnight Cowboy is brought to full resolution for the first time since its 2018 debut.

The most essential release to start 2027, though, is a Blu-ray set of Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project. The sixth edition of arguably Criterion’s finest ongoing project features Flora Gomes’ Morta Nega (from Guinea-Bissau), Luis Sérgio Person’s São Paulo, Incorporated (from Brazil), Timité Bassori’s The Woman with the Knife (from Côte d’Ivoire), and Bahram Beyzai’s The Stranger and the Fog (from Iran). Once on the edge of extinction, these films are given the ideal, as Richard Linklater would say, forever home.
