Christine Haroutounian Crafts a Surreal Vision of War In Exclusive Trailer for After Dreaming

Christine Haroutounian’s feature-directing debut, After Dreaming, has taken a long route towards New York exhibition. After premiering at the 2025 Berlinale, the film appeared at some festivals of high renown (Busan, Thessalonki) before finally landing a U.S. home at the Los Angeles Festival of Movies in 2026. Nearly seven months after that, the first New York showing of After Dreaming comes this Sunday, October 25 at Asia Society as part of an Armenian cinema retrospective whose programmer, Sona Karapoghosyan, deemed Haroutounian’s film a “surreal exploration of a patriarchal society inseparable from war.” With this occasion in mind, we’re pleased to exclusively unveil a massively intriguing trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis: “Armenia, before peace yet after war. A well-driller is mistaken as an enemy and killed in the countryside. Back in the city, his family decides to keep his death a secret from their daughter, Claudette. They ask a soldier, Atom, to take her away before the funeral. The next morning, Claudette returns from choir practice to find no one home but Atom. He reassures Claudette that her family is awaiting her at a remote monastery. On the road together, faces and places at the brink of disappearing come into existence just as they fall away.”
