In an oh-so-convenient dovetailing with their bi-annual Barnes and Noble sale, the Criterion Collection’s November line-up is one for the books: the arrival of long-rumored titles, a deep cut, 4K upgrades, and one of the year’s greatest films in a Janus Contemporaries edition. Top of mind are David Lynch’s Wild at Heart and Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, which are not paired in a Booed at Cannes boxset—an idea they should consider, and in fact will surely implement after reading this column—but come as individual 4K editions, the former including 90 minutes of deleted scenes only previously seen in Lynch’s long-out-of-print Lime Green set.
New to the collection, too, are Sergei Parajanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (which will look great on UHD, if not quite matching my experience seeing it deliriously tired in a Polish church), The Right Stuff (a strong overlap between “dad’s favorite movie” and “great movie”), and KPop Demon Hunters, about which you’ve seen countless discourse that, if you like wasting your time, even contributed to.
Upgrade-wise, look for new 4Ks of Shoot the Piano Player, which Criterion first released in 2005, and Harold and Maude. Coming to Janus Contemporaries and every bit the equal of nearly every November title is Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron, which also happens to be the rare new film that invests enough cinematographic care to warrant a Blu-ray edition.
