Never one to play it safe, Cristian Mungiu earned his second Palme d’Or under somewhat contentious circumstances. While (obviously) well-liked in plenty corners, Fjord engendered seemingly as many skeptical, if not outright incensed reactions—perhaps a film about the legal consequences of religiously aligned parenting techniques that doesn’t (or, let’s imagine, does?) take a side wasn’t so easy as making a movie about cops in Miami. But it’ll probably fuel a better post-screening discussion, and Neon will begin Fjord‘s North American run on October 9, ahead of which is a new trailer.
As Luke Hicks said in our Critics’ Pick review out of Cannes, “As with R.M.N., Mungiu is in top-shelf operation. Fjord is a triumphant film that tugs at the spiritual and soulful in all of us, regardless of nation, creed, faith, or the rejection of all three. What the court will rule in both cases, and whether or not the Gheorghius will get back their kids, pulses with a pregnant tension as the nearly two-and-a-half-hour film proceeds in what seems 30 minutes. And its end will have you falling off the edge of your seat.”
Here’s the official synopsis: “From two time Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu, a Norwegian woman and her devout Romanian husband relocate with their five children to a remote, close-knit, coastal town. Their teenage children form a fast bond with a neighboring family as unease begins to simmer around their rigid beliefs. When allegations of abuse emerge, they are forced to confront a system of judgement that blurs the lines between concern and prejudice.”
