Returning with his first feature since 2008’s Ballast, Lance Hammer’s Queen at Sea premiered at Berlinale earlier this year and will now be hitting theaters on October 30. Led by Juliette Binoche and Tom Courtenay, with cinematography by Academy Award nominee Adolpho Veloso (Train Dreams), Greenwich Entertainment has now released the first trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Amanda and her stepfather Martin struggle with a moral issue that divides them. Has Amanda’s mother Leslie, who has dementia, lost the ability to make critical decisions in her own best interests? And, if so, who is responsible – a spouse, a child, an institution – for making such a determination? As Amanda and Martin are forced to make increasingly difficult choices, the repercussions spiral out of their control. Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (The Taste of Things), Academy Award nominee Tom Courtenay (45 Years), Anna Calder-Marshall (Wuthering Heights), and Florence Hunt (Bridgerton) star in this unflinching drama. The film won the Silver Bear Jury Prize and Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.”
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “Eleven years ago, Tom Courtenay arrived at the Berlinale with Andrew Haigh’s 45 Years, an exquisitely observed study of emotional dilemma in which the British actor played a doddery romantic whose selfish tendencies threatened to get the better of him. He returns to the German festival with a performance of similar weight and resonance in Lance Hammer’s Queen at Sea, a film that centers on an even more challenging moral dilemma—albeit with results that are slightly less delightfully ambiguous than those Haigh managed in 2015.”
