Josephine Trailer: Sundance Grand Jury and Audience Award Winner Arrives This November

After winning both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year (which last happened with CODA, which went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards), Beth de Araújo’s harrowing, emotional drama Josephine—starring Mason Reeves, Channing Tatum, Gemma Chan, and Philip Ettinger—will now get a release this fall from Sumerian Pictures. The first trailer has arrived ahead of a November 20 release.

Here’s the synopsis: “Based on writer/director/producer Beth de Araújo’s own lived experiences, the film JOSEPHINE follows the psychological fallout after eight-year-old Josephine (Reeves) witnesses a crime in Golden Gate Park. As she acts out, her parents (Tatum and Chan) struggle with helping their daughter cope, while facing their own fears around the topic and how to address it with their child. JOSEPHINE is a story about a family as we have never seen before, featuring knockout performances from Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan.”

I said in my review, “Perspective is everything in Beth de Araújo’s Josephine, a stomach-churning drama focused on the loss of innocence and the ill-equipped guidance—both parental and bureaucratic—that can compound enduring trauma. We first meet eight-year-old Josephine (Mason Reeves, in a remarkable debut performance) through her own eyes while heading for early-morning soccer training with her father Damien (Channing Tatum). While this first-person approach is sporadically returned-to, Araújo stays close with her lead character for nearly the entirety of the film. This formal bridge to Josephine’s fragile emotional state—rattled as she witnesses a horrific act and endures the unfathomable aftermath—is the strongest quality of Araújo’s blistering feature, which can hit a snag when such focus is disrupted.”
